Players Impress
During Spring Training players struggle (Derek Jeter, CC
Sabathia) and players are good (Javier Vazquez, Alex Rodriguez) and some
players surprise us. That is what this post will be about, the surprises of
this year’s Yankees camp.
I’ll
start with the only pitcher I have thought about. Well before Ace started to
blow up like a bomb, Sergio Mitre was having a great spring and he still is. He
has a 3.79 ERA in 19 innings this Spring Training, which isn’t great but it’s
better than CC, Burnett, Joba, Javier Vazquez and most of the other guys.
Mitre, coming off a bad season after his Tommy John surgery season, is set to
have a good year. Many players have great years in their second year from Tommy
John for some whack reason. Mitre isn’t the 5th starter but very
well could have been, but Phil Hughes was named with the position. I am
starting to get really scared about the Yankee pitching staff… It is
struggling. We will see and hope that the Yankees rotation gets better.
Another
player impressing is Jon Weber who you probably have never ever heard of. Ever.
He is a minor league veteran who has never played in the Major’s before and he
is 32. Is this the year? Marcus Thames is struggling, still hitting .136 with 2 homers,
and Randy Winn isn’t doing so hot either. Weber is smoking .519 in 28 at-bats
this spring. He deserves a job with the club, but remember, 28 AB’s isn’t THAT
many at bats. We will see how it works out for Weber.
The
last surprise player me and Mrinal have been surprised by is David Winfree. He
isn’t hitting over .300 but he has 6 RBI’s! The team leader only has nine so
six by an unknown invitee is pretty impressive. He will definitely not make the
team unless he doesn’t get out in any of his remaining at-bats which we all
know is probably unlikely
Opening day is coming up soon, when the Yanks kill the Red Sox, sorry let me correct myself, Red Sux. The Yanks ain’t looking so hot though, they are only 11-14 in Spring Training. Spring Training, like i have said many times, doesn’t matter but the players are struggling. Jeter is hitting .227. CC has a 7.60 ERA. Marcus Thames has a .136 BA. So the Yankees better pull this together by the regular season. Maybe, just maybe its George Steinbrenner field. The Yankees are so used to the dimensions of Yankee Stadium that they aren’t hitting as many moon-shots and stuff. Let’s pray that the stars of the team (Jeter, CC) will get it together and win.
Hughes, Gaudin, Joba
Well I know I was wrong. Phil Hughes has won the role of the
5th starter. He will not go to the minors, but instead use his new
changeup in his repertoire to fool hitters and dominate in the 5th
spot. I hope. Hughes doesn’t have enough minor league innings to be a reliable
Major league starter. He’s like Joba, but Joba has had enough innings in the
Major’s to do not have an innings limit. Here come the Hughes rules. I don’t want
to have to read about these stupid rules in an article on The Official Site of
the New York Yankees. I am not wasting my time. I could use that time to play
outside with the lovely flowers and what not. But no. The Joba rules were silly
enough, but the Phil rules. Don’t get me started.
Speaking about Joba, what’s he going to do? Here’s a little
imaginary conversation I had with my conscious- that also happens to be a
Yankee fan that doesn’t know anything about baseball…
Conscious: Soak up in the Minors?
Me: No
Conscious: Be trade bait for Albert Pujols?
Me: Heck, no… That couldn’t work in a zillion years.
Conscious: Umm… trade bait for Joe Mauer?
Me: HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO SAY NO!!
Conscious: So what’s Joba going to do?
Me: Isn’t it obvious? Oh yeah I forgot… You don’t know anything about baseball.
Please don’t be as stupid as my conscious. There is no way in heaven and h***
that Albert Pujols would be traded to the Yankees. OK never mind… Joba will be
hanging out in the bullpen with Mo and Ace and all those dudes. The eighth
inning dude. Big spot. Joba thrives there though so I except to see excellence
from him… But you never know. He had a horrible Spring Training. We will see
how it plays out.
Now this all means something.
Most of the reliever spots are closed. Eighth inning guy, long reliever. Hey
wait! Long reliever. Chad Gaudin and Sergio Mitre. That brings me to another
topic I wanted to talk about. Chad Gaudin has been released wah wah wah… He wasn’t
that great but neither was Sergio Mitre. They both can be solid players but they
can also be crap. So the Yankees released Gaudin which would also make me assume
that Sergio Mitre get’s the role. “Yay!!” I’m booing on the inside.
Here is the last thing I wanted
to tell you about. The Yankees are doing suckish. All Yankee fans admit it. All
Red Sox fans… don’t comment. It’s not like you aren’t doing any better. They
are 9-12 and have lost to teams like the Nationals… Ugg… and the Orioles…
double ugg… and the… Well you get the point. But Spring Training doesn’t mean
anything. All the Yankees players are doing great, the pitchers aren’t doing
half bad and the team is doing pretty good. Just think of it. The last half of
the game, players from AAA A playing in the game. This definently means
something. My last point is that the A’s are the winners of the AL West with a
9-10 record if the season ended like this.
The Case of the 5th Starter
Joba continues to struggle in Spring Training which leaves
me thinking. Who will be the Yankees 5th Starter? With Chamberlain struggling,
that leaves Hughes, Acevas, Mitre, and Gaudin. Like I said yesterday, Mitre
could win the spot. Acevas could win it. Hughes could win it. Gaudin could win
it. Now we have to narrow it down. Gaudin seems to be better in the long relief
spot so I would prefer to keep him in the Pen. Hughes seems to struggle in the
5th spot and excel in the 8th inning role. So I would
send him to the 8th inning. That leaves Mitre and Acevas. With
Mitre, I don’t know where to put him. Unless he puts on a show in Spring
Training, I would trade him or Gaudin and stick the other one in the Pen.
Acevas I would put in the other long relief spot or the 5th starting
role. You have 5 guys who are all competing for the spot so it is very
difficult to figure out where to all go. This is a rough idea of the bullpen
and rotation.
Rotation
SP1: CC Sabathia
SP2: AJ Burnett
SP3: Javier Vazquez
SP4: Andy Pettitte
SP5: Joba Chamberlain/ Phil Hughes/ Alfredo Acevas/
Bullpen
CL: Mariano Rivera
Set-Up: Joba Chamberlain/ Phil Hughes
RP: Damaso Marte
RP: David Robertson
RP: Mark Melancon/ Boone Logan/ Jonathan Albaledejo
LP: Chad Gaudin/ Sergio Mitre/ Alfredo Acevas
LP: Chad Gaudin/ Sergio Mitre/ Alfredo Acevas
So as you see there are a bunch of slashes… Lots of them
include Mitre, Acevas etc. So here is how I think it will play out. Alfredo
Acevas will win the starting role but only if he keeps up what he has been
doing. Joba will end up in the eighth inning role with Chad Gaudin or Sergio
Mitre and Phil Hughes is the long relief role. Hughes still has options and not
enough minor league innings so he could go to the Minors. If not then either
Sergio or Chad will have to go. And for the Mark Melancon role… I think Mark
Melancon will get his chance to play. Yes I do.
The Yankees game was rained out today so was it yesterday so
I have been bored of late.
Peace,
The YankeeHolics
Mitre, Cervelli, Johnson
Yankees 4-5 in Spring Training, but it’s only Spring Training! Sorry but
we haven’t been able to get many posts up of late, cuz we have been really
busy! Sorry once again and we will truly try out hardest to get a few articles
up over the next few weeks.
So lots of happened since our
last post (February 28th) including of course 9 Spring Training games,
and Sergio Mitre making a push for the rotation…? Wait what?! Sergio Mitre is
supposed to be the only Yankee I think is horrible (because he is. Sorta.) and
he has a good chance of making the rotation. The Yankee Universe has gone up
surd including Phil Hughes possibly visiting the minors…? WHY! He was arguably
the best 8th inning guy in all of b-ball last year and you are
thinking of sending him to the Minors! I understand that he doesn’t have enough
innings, but same with Joba and what is he doing? Taking the ball every 5 days.
Also Francisco Cervelli was hit
in the head with a pitch and is supposed to be fine but @#$# Zech Zenicola!
Without Frankie we would have a 20 year old prospect that has barely 3 years of
service time and can’t play the position of catcher. Properly. Jesus Montero is
one of the most high regarded prospects in baseball and I don’t know what I would
do if the Yanks traded him. Jump off a cliff? Maybe. So the good thing is Frankie
“Gazoo” Cervelli is still OK and the Yankees are fine… Except for CC and Javy
Vazquez’s disappointing… 2 innings or so?
Last news of our day… Nick
Johnson hit two homers in a game which is a good sign after an “embarrassing”
0-2 game. Every bad has bad games and sure I love trashing people but 0-2 in a
Spring Training game for a dude who gets injured A LOT, is fine.
Thanks and once again
we will try to blog more often.
Bye!
